In America we are trained that health and well-being comes in a pill bottle. We see commercials on TV that tell us which pills to ask our healthcare providers for. When we go to see our provider, we have 7-10 minutes to tell them what is wrong so they can give us a pill and move to the next patient. Healthcare is about what medication should be prescribed after a disorder has been identified.
Even what are called “preventative” appointments are really screening appointments for diseases. This cycle is perpetuated by the insurance system, as it is set up to reward quantity over quality. What is not advertised is that we are getting sicker and that the pills are treating symptoms, not the underlying cause. We are told that we should eat better and exercise, but that is the end of the conversation.
